The Society of Jesus (Jesuits) initiated the Nativity model in New York. The model is based on small schools with an intense academic focus. Other hallmarks of the model are a long school day, a 10-month school year, and after-school homework assistance and enrichment programs. Graduates participate in a follow-up program. There are currently 64 Nativity schools in 19 states, with more under development.

A member of the national Nativity Educational Centers Network (www.nativitymiguelschools.org), Marian Middle School is one of nine Nativity girls schools nationwide. It is the only Nativity girls school in St. Louis. Locally, the Jesuits sponsor Loyola Academy for boys, and the Christian Brothers sponsor the De La Salle Middle School at St. Matthew’s parish. A coed Nativity school—St. Cecelia’s—opened in a parish setting in 2005.
