What does it take to be a MARIAN girl?
She must be:
- In grade 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th
- Of average or above average ability
- Eligible for a free or reduced-fee lunch
- A girl of promise, capable of meeting the eligibility requirements of a college preparatory high school
- Supported by at least one caring adult who is actively involved in her education
- In need of a challenge or falling behind in a traditional school setting
Enrichment Programs
The learning environment continues well after the academic day ends. After school, staff and volunteer's present a range of programs aimed at developing mind, body, and spirit. Marian has a volleyball and basketball team, both of which compete in Catholic school leagues. Study hall and tutoring are program fixtures, examples of other enrichment activities include drama, foreign language, health care issues, goal setting, music, art, and sewing.
Environment
“Responsibility” and “respect” are two words that characterize the environment at Marian Middle School. Teachers and staff alike model these concepts and nurture them in students. Students wear simple uniforms of blue slacks and white tops and leave their electronics at home. They're expected to be on time and homework ready! Students and staff are partners in minimizing distractions and enhancing learning.
Capacity
A major factor in the success of Marian's educational model is small class sizes. Each student receives individualized attention within the classroom, as well as from after school mentors and tutors. Marian has the capacity to educate 80 students annually.
Tuition
In keeping with its mission, Marian Middle School offers a private-school education to adolescents from economically disadvantaged families. The tuition is nominal and based on the family's financial situation. Marian's tuition fees are significantly augmented by grants, gifts, fund-raisers, and the generosity of corporate and individual donors.
Family Involvement
The extended school day – 7:30 am to 5:30 pm – allows ample time for students to complete their homework assignments and participate in enrichment activities. As a result, school requirements during family time are minimal. Supportive, caring adults will make sure that the Marian girl has reliable transportation, balanced nutrition and adequate sleep, clean uniform, and encouragement in her school experience.
Marian faculty ask that the caregiver sign off on the student's weekly family folder, perform two hours of volunteer service a month, and attend one parent-teacher conference a year.
